The Italian Language Program offers the possibility of completing all MAT course requirements in Italian in three consecutive summers, or of earning credit for professional development or continuing education. The Program is designed for individuals already teaching Italian, but also is open to prospective teachers at the K-12 school level. Credits acquired through the Italian Language Program may be accepted for state certification. While not mandatory, teachers are invited to apply for the MAT after the successful completion of two Italian courses in the World Languages Institute. TRANSLATION WORKSHOP: PRACTICE AND THEORY (CR. 3)

This course will introduce you to the craft of literary translation as well as the theoretical foundations of translation studies. In class, we will complete various translation exercises that will encourage you to reflect on the translation process. Additionally, we will discuss a wide range of theoretical texts that will shape your approach to translation. At the beginning of the semester, you will select a source text (ST) to translate into English, for which you will write a proposal. Throughout the semester, your translation work will be carefully reviewed by fellow students in both small groups and as a class.

Taught in Italian, this course examines various aspects of contemporary Italian culture through the discussion of a variety of print and non-print materials: articles, selected readings, videos, literary and cinematic texts on contemporary Italian politics and society.
This course has been designed to enrich students’ knowledge of contemporary Italian society and culture and to enhance their communicative skills as well as their ability to comprehend rapid spoken language. At the end of the course, students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and the perspectives of Italian culture. They will be able to understand and communicate complex social and cultural ideas in standard Italian.
