Upper School Spanish Teacher - West Sound Academy

West Sound Academy (WSA) is a college preparatory International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for grades 6-12 with an approximate enrollment of 130 students. WSA is located on a rural 20-acre campus in Poulsbo, Washington just a 30 minute ferry ride from Seattle. WSA focuses on preparing compassionate, courageous and creative students capable of excelling in a global community. West Sound Academy is seeking a .6-.8FTE Upper School Spanish teacher for grades 9-12. There is possibility of picking up additional FTE for middle school language classes. This Spanish teacher will join a faculty and administration of 25 and reports to the Head of School. Responsibilities include planning and delivering Spanish curriculum to small class sizes with an average ratio of 9:1. The language program at WSA is as follows: Grade 6: Communications Fall Semester; World Languages Spring Semester Grade 7: Intro to Latin Fall Semester, Computer Language and Logic Spring Semester Grade 8: Intro to French Fall Semester, Intro to Spanish Spring Semester Grade 9: Spanish or French I, Intermediate English Language (international students only) Grade 10: Spanish or French II Grade 11: Spanish or French III; TOEFL prep class (international students only) Grade 12: IB Spanish HL or SL; TOEFL prep class (international Students only)

Duties include: • Classroom instruction of Spanish I, II, III and IB Spanish HL and SL in a rotating block schedule, with an emphasis on building all aspects of language learning including auditory, verbal, writing and reading skills in a 90 - 100% immersed classroom; • Teaching students to make connections in their learning and be self-directed when appropriate • The ability to differentiate work load for students who may be placed in multi-level classes • Written evaluations of students two times during the year combined with frequent communication to parents via email or phone; • Conferences with students and colleagues two to three times per year; • Serving as advisor for ten to twelve grade 8-10 students meeting once per week and acting as a primary point of contact for parents • Serving as an advisor for an after- or during-school club • Active collaboration with other faculty within the Language Acquisition and other departments • Attending department and faculty meetings and evening events as requested; • Possible additional FTE assigned to teach a middle school language class based on the teacher’s interests and strengths • Development and implementation of a three week June Term course of focused study based on the teacher’s interests and experience for multi-age groups of middle and upper school students; • One overnight fall retreat and the possibility of leading, at the teacher’s discretion, a multi-day overnight field trip which may include outdoor activities such as rafting, camping, climbing, hiking, sea-kayaking or canoeing; • Active participation in the life of the school community. Successful candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Spanish or a related field and should possess native or near-native proficiency in both Spanish and English. Candidates must have experience teaching Spanish in an upper school or late middle-school level. Lastly, the ideal candidate will have experience living in a Spanish-speaking country, be familiar with the IB Diploma Programme and be computer literate.
