How we acquire our language is one of the most fascinating aspects of human development, and best practices in the classroom must be based on that research. This introductory course investigates theories of second language acquisition. Emphasis is placed on theories that have been proposed in the last twenty-five years and their impact on instruction. Conducted in English.

This course is designed to develop teachers’ abilities to use technology effectively to support world language education. Through a consideration of research, the National Educational Technology Standards for Students, and hands-on experiences with technology, teachers develop and design projects to be used in the world language class. They also look at the effective use of the Internet and critically evaluate its authentic cultural materials as a way to provide comprehensible input for students. In addition, teachers examine and learn to use various multi-media software available for the teaching of world languages. Conducted in English with language-specific assignments.

This course is designed to provide a firm foundation in and understanding of performance-based assessment and rubric design. The focus is the development of tasks to be used in teachers’ classes during the school year. Through a consideration of backwards design and authentic assessment, teachers learn to develop tasks that set realistic expectations for their students, and how research and theory on language proficiency help us to understand the stages of developing linguistic acquisition. This knowledge will inform the strategies and techniques that lead to authentic assessment of language use. Conducted in English.

Refinement of reading, writing, and oral proficiency skills; vocabulary building; and content-based unit development in world languages. Includes discussion of resources taken from a variety of media. Development of instructional materials appropriate for K-12, with an emphasis on teaching math and the sciences in the target languages. Conducted in English with language-specific group sessions.

A three-credit individual project that is to be completed and presented to the student's two-person committee following the completion of the twenty-seven credits of course work. The portfolio reflects the student's individual teaching situation as well as the application of theory and practice from course work taken at the WLI. It entails the preparation of four thematic units utilizing the communicative approach to language. Two units are to be based on the textbook and teaching situation of the candidate; the other two units are to be 'dream' units, in which the candidate develops age-appropriate materials that would be the ideal.
