Participants in the German Language Program may earn a limited number of credits toward the MAT in German. Courses also may be taken as professional development or continuing education and may be accepted for state certification. Teachers may begin with any of the Core Curriculum methodology and theory courses. Prospective MAT students should consult on course selection with the Department of Germanic, Russian and East European Languages and Literatures.

Emphasis on the ability to write and speak German at a variety of levels. Analysis and practice of different types of daily usage (from formal to colloquial, idiomatic, poetic, administrative, and political) through a number of oral and written activities including journal entries, business letters, magazine and newspaper articles, short stories, and poems. Review of crucial grammatical points focusing on the practical application of the communicative, direct approach that K-12 teachers of German may implement in their own classes. Conducted in German.
