MAT candidates who will have accumulated 27 credits by the end of this summer’s World Languages Institute are encouraged to register this summer for their last three credits, which is an independent study, to begin work on their teaching portfolio. Students may register concurrently for the last few WLI courses needed to acquire 27 credits and for the independent study.
Following are some general guidelines for the MAT portfolio procedure, but be aware that each language department might have slightly different requirements:
Before registering for the independent study, MAT candidates should confer with the departmental graduate director to inform him/her about their number of credits acquired to date and to indicate their readiness to begin a teaching portfolio. At that time candidates also should discuss with the graduate director some appropriate choices for a two-person portfolio committee. Normally this committee is composed of two professors with whom the candidate has taken WLI courses. Candidates are responsible for selecting a committee director, and then in consultation with this director, choosing the other committee member.
Once the two-member committee has been selected, the candidate may then register for the independent study. Those taking the independent study will be required to attend an orientation session on the composition and development of a teaching portfolio. The session is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, July 15 in either the late afternoon or early evening, but the exact time will be determined based on student availability. Candidates may, with committee approval, extend their independent study into the fall semester if additional time is needed to complete and present their portfolio.
The following independent study course will be used by MAT candidates from all language departments who are ready to begin work on their teaching portfolio during the summer:

TEACHING PORTFOLIO PROJECT
A
three-credit individual project that is to be completed and presented to the student's two-person committee following the completion of the twenty-seven credits of course work. The portfolio reflects the student's individual teaching situation as well as the application of theory and practice from coursework taken at the WLI. It entails the preparation of six thematic units utilizing the communicative approach to language. Three units are to be based on the textbook and teaching situation of the candidate; the other three units are to be 'dream' units, in which the candidate develops age-appropriate materials that would be the ideal.
This course requires a special permission number, so please contact the WLI office for assistance with your registration.
