Italian Courses

The Italian Language Program offers the possibility of completing all MAT course requirements in Italian in three consecutive summers, or of earning credit for professional development or continuing education. The Program is designed for individuals already teaching Italian, but also is open to prospective teachers at the K-12 school level. Credits acquired through the Italian Language Program may be accepted for state certification. While not mandatory, teachers are invited to apply for the MAT after the successful completion of two Italian courses in the World Languages Institute. Details of the MAT program are available at the Department of Italian or its web site at http://italian.rutgers.edu.

This online course focuses on the close-reading of short stories by prominent authors, such as De Amicis, Tarchetti, Serao, Verga, Messina, Negri, Pirandello, Buzzati, Calvino, Rodari, and Scego. We will address key social and cultural issues of the 19th-21st centuries (such as regional cultures, the 'economic miracle,' gender conflicts, and migration) as well as literary movements and genres ('Verismo,' the fantastic, and neorealism). Our analysis will be supported by critical readings and a wide array of visual materials (clips from You Tube and from movies by Monicelli and the Taviani brothers). Completion of questionnaires and short papers required. Conducted in Italian.

This course provides an overview of some of the major trends and movements in Italian history and culture and focuses on their influence on the music of the “Bel Paese.” The intent is to familiarize students with the movements and trends that have influenced the development of Italian music from its origin to modern times. This online course explores the historical period of the “Economic Miracle” and how it affected Italian society. After World War II, Italy was undergoing significant political, economic and social transformations; it was emerging from the oppressive Fascist regime and its people were battling extreme hunger and poverty. As a result, huge migrations of rural, Southern Italians moved to urban, Northern Italy in search for better economic opportunities. Through an analysis of literary and filmic texts you will examine social anxieties and gender issues caused by the economic boom to understand this specific time frame in Italy. You will engage with readings and films of authors like Buzzati, Alba de Céspedes and Testori and directors like Risi, De Sica and Visconti. Conducted in Italian.
